Storybound: Going Against the Norm (ft. Jude Brewer)

Radio theatre is defined as a dramatized performance — no visual, only dialogue and sounds to manifest images in the listeners’ minds, resulting in a uniquely psychological experience. This mode of storytelling began in the 1920s, flourishing by the 1940s, then evolving in the 21st century in the form of podcasts. And while Jude Brewer’s podcast Storybound falls into the category of radio theatre, it doesn’t quite sound like the rest of them. Inside today’s episode, Jay and Jude discuss the collaboration between voice and music. Over the past four seasons, Storybound listeners have been treated to their favorite authors reading some of their most powerful writing, designed with immersive sound environments and experimental cross-genre music compositions handcrafted and arranged by creator and host Jude Brewer. Jude is a writer, actor, and musician. He’s also the editor and sound designer for his own show Storybound. Most recently, Jude won First Place in the KCRW Radio Race, for which his piece “BUZZY” received critical acclaim. His weekly newsletter, How Long Must I Belong To This? is currently being developed into a show. True Love & Other Noncommunicable Diseases: Making the Personal...Performative! (ft. Brianna Barrett)

November 08, 2021

True Love & Other Noncommunicable Diseases: Making the Personal...Performative! (ft. Brianna Barrett)

A camera. A cancer diagnosis. True love. Romantic comedy. Award-winning writer and storyteller Brianna Barrett has performed her show about serious illness and resilience to audiences along the west coast since 2016. Now Brianna reimagines the experience of her one-woman play in audio form, navigating the threads of her life that continue to come together in surprising and unusual ways, even amid a global pandemic. Welcome to Brianna Barrett’s semi-limited series: True Love & Other Noncommunicable Diseases, a podcast that manages to carve out a sharp narrative niche, elevating “coming of age” by swapping tragedy for comedy, and vice versa, in a heartbreakingly awkward and hilarious study of narrator-versus-performer, and the memory of self. Inside today’s episode, as timely as ever, Jay and Brianna break down the meta-meta and the nitty gritty of storytelling. What does “better now” mean for a cancer survivor? And what would your ex say if you told them that you had written a play about your past relationship and then performed it on stage for thousands of strangers over the past several years? And by the way. You’re going to read that play aloud to them. Alone. While recording their reaction. Brianna Barrett is a playwright, storyteller, obscure history buff, and avid tea-lover. Her full-length theatrical work has been developed at Artists Repertory Theater, Theatre33, Fertile Ground Festival, HART Theatre, and UCLA. Her TV work has been developed with Stuber, Farah Films, Hollywood Laundromat and ICM. She’s performed at venues such as Pickathon (yes the music festival!), and now she’s performing in your ears via her debut limited series podcast, True Love & Other Noncommunicable Diseases. Camp Monsters: Audio as a Visual Medium (ft. Weston Davis)

Camp Monsters: Audio as a Visual Medium (ft. Weston Davis)

Audio as a Visual Medium is a paradox in many ways. But when done well, writing for the ear, editing and sound design can create a visual world through audio. Camp Monsters from REI…yes the brand, is a perfect example of this. Written, hosted and narrated Weston Davis, Camp Monsters features as they put it “stories of impossible encounters with impossible creatures in the wildest corners of North America.” Along with producer Chelsea Davis and sound designer Nick Patri, REI has created a branded podcast that doesn’t feel like a branded podcast. It feels more like an old fashioned radio drama reimagined. Unread: Digital Breadcrumbs (ft. Chris Stedman)

One December evening in 2019, Chris Stedman noticed a new message in his inbox from his friend Alex, sent at exactly 7 p.m. He and Alex hadn’t talked in a while—was Alex writing to tell him off for being a bad friend? But it wasn’t that. “listen,” the note read. “i am writing to let you know that when you receive this scheduled email, i will no longer be alive.” Welcome to Unread, a podcast from iHeart that has landed on many best-of-2021 lists while striking a deep chord with its audience. Inside today’s episode, Jay speaks with Chris Stedman, creator and writer of Unread, a show with a unique approach toward mental health and cultural icons. Chris breaks down the process of conceptualizing an intimately personal project with a team, and how podcasting differs from the written word. Chris Stedman is a Minneapolis-based writer, speaker, and professor who currently teaches in the Department of Religion and Philosophy at Augsburg University. He is the author of IRL and Faitheist, and Unread is his first podcast.
